  • Chevron's Tengiz Oil Field Expansion in Kazakhstan

The Tengiz Field in Kazakhstan is one of the worlds 10 largest crude oil fields — and one of the most complex to produce. The crude oil is high in hydrogen sulfide gas, and the reservoirs must be maintained at ultra-high pressures in order to maximize production. Two expansion projects of extraordinary scope have overcome both challenges and almost doubled production capacity to 540,000 barrels of crude oil, 760 million cubic feet of natural gas and 46,000 barrels of natural gas liquids per day. One project called for building the largest facility in the world for processing crude oil and separating out the hydrogen sulfide gas. The second included a specially designed compressor that reinjects one-third of the gas back into the reservoir at the highest pressures ever achieved. The gas hel...

  • Made in Germany | Oil from Kazakhstan

The Kazakh oil fields are hotly contested. Western and Russian oil concerns both want to access the huge reserves. Kazakhstan has been playing hard to get, and trying to make deals with both. In addition, the former Soviet republic is looking into alternative oil export routes that do not cross Russia, such as the BTC pipeline. The problem is that Russia has been putting Alma-Ata under pressure. It wants to regain its dominance over Central Asia. The state-run oil company KazMunayGaz is not interested in public relations, and rarely allows cameras on its production sites. But Christoph Wanner managed to get a look at Kazakhstan's oilfields.

Finally, nearly a decade late and five times over budget, the Kashagan oil field in Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea has begun production. A consortium including Shell, Total, Exxon Mobil and ENI once promised new riches for the former Soviet country with huge profits for shareholders. That was before cost overruns, delays, government interference and internal disputes. One energy analyst says it will be years yet before it makes a profit. "A lot of money has been spent already, so in order to get a return on their expenses, companies will have to keep producing without investing a lot, maintaining the current level of about 400,000 barrels per day, for 10-12 years at least. Only after that will they probably be able to make a profit," said Alexander Nazarov from Gazprombank. The cost of developing the oil field was estimated at 10 billion dollars a decade ago but spiralled to 50 billion. The Caspian's icy and stormy waters meant several artificial islands had to be built instead of rigs. Gas and chemicals added to the technical problems. Leaders toast STORYLINE China and Kazakhstan signed a deal on Monday to construct a major crude oil pipeline between the two countries to boost Kazakh oil exports to China. The agreement was signed during Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's four-day visit to China. Construction on the 900-kilometre pipeline is expected to begin in June. It is scheduled for completion in 2006 with initial output estimated at 10 (m) million metric tons a year, expected to double later. The 700 (m) million US dollars pipeline will span from Atasu in northwestern Kazakhstan to the border of China's Xinjiang autonomous region. The crude will be further transported by rail to the Karamay, Dushanzi and Urumqi refineries in Xinjiang for processing. China National Petroleum Corp. and Kazakhstan's state-owned KazMunaiGaz will jointly invest in the pipeline. It is unclear the size of the stake CNPC will have in the pipeline, but China-based industry sources said it is likely that KazMunaiGaz will hold a majority of 51%. The line is the second section of a 3,000-kilometre trunk line between the two countries. The first section, spanning 449 kilometres from Atyrau to Kenkiyak in Kazakhstan, was completed at the end of 2002. The third section is still in the planning stage and will be built between Atasu and Kenkiyak later. CNPC-Aktobemunaigas, CNPC's venture in Kazakhstan, now produces crude oil from Kazakhstan's Zhanazhol and Kenkiyak fields. It plans to raise its production there to 5.5 million tons this year, and to 7 million tons in 2005, up from 4.65 million tons produced last year. Recoverable oil reserves at the Zhanazhol field totalled more than 78 million tons of oil at the end of 2003, and the Kenkiyak fields hold about 45.5 million tons. Last year, China imported 1.19 million tons of crude oil from Kazakhstan, up 19% on year.
